Too “manly” to skip meat?

Hunter=Man

Gatherer=Woman

Together, they have the best of both worlds and make the perfect meal for the family.

Right?

Uh, maybe centuries ago!

But not so today.

So many guys that I’ve known in the past tell me how they could never be vegetarian, because they “need their meat” and that lettuce is woman food.  I get slightly agitated at these naive comments but have to laugh them off…because they couldn’t be farther from the truth (plus, there’s way more to my life than just lettuce!).  I’m a nutrition expert.  And I know that men and women alike can create optimal health off of a plant based diet (in different proportions however).  My hunnie, Rob, is a shining example; not to mention I find that quality about him incredibly attractive :)

But let’s leave the physical aspect out of it.  Let’s leave the “we used to be hunters wearing fig leaves” out of it.  Let’s get down to the ethics for a moment.  I know it’s rare of me to lean wholly on the ethical aspects of being a vegan, since I’m more into this for the sheer science of it all, but seriously here’s a little tidbit for you.

Reality of our modern day surroundings is not a home of fields, rocks and huts.  We have access to up-to-date grocery stores and sadly, factory farms.

There is no need for men to feel insecure.  There is no need to cover up the insecurity about masculinity by eating lots of meat, grilling, or hunting.  “Primal” instinct isn’t necessary anymore.  Sure, our ancestors did rely on large quantities of animal meat for survival, but then again, look at the circumstances–no modern day conveniences.

We now have the knowledge to obtain even better quality protein from plant sources.  It’s time to realize the extreme circumstances of our planet and reduce our damage.  An easy way to do this is by eliminating animals and their products from our meal plans.

Being a man makes you a man.  Eating animals doesn’t make you “a man”.   Killing animals for food doesn’t “make you a man”, especially when it’s not necessary, it’s just adding to our compounding problems.  Choosing veganism is choosing life.  For yourself, the animals and the planet.   Last time I checked, I found it more “manly” to save a life than to take one.
