Pigs Eat Ham

Piggin out?

Piggin out?

Boost Mobile Commercial
March 12, 2009

Last night I was up watching Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. A commercial came on with two pigs dining in a fancy restaurant, eating a ham. The one pig says, as he’s got a piece of ham poked up on his fork, “I like a nice ham.”

The other one nods.

Pig #1 continues, “You think that’s wrong? We’re just enjoying the flavors of a fallen friend.”

Pig #2 says, “True.”

Then Pig #1 goes, “I’ll tell you what’s wrong, a cell phone company that charges hidden fees.”

The commercial goes on a bit more (check out “boost mobile commercial pigs” on You Tube for the video) and at first sight of seeing this last night, I almost crapped my pants. I am to say the least, outraged with this commercial.

I would like to say, first of all, if you know the truth about the animal farming industry, you will know that this “pig-eating-pig” scenario is not just a hook for a commercial; it actually happens.

Like the commercial says, “We’re just enjoying the flavors of a fallen friend.” Fallen animals are commonly “recycled” or ground up into the, otherwise vegetarian, feed of the rest of the animals…to stretch the food supply and for disposing convenience. Secondly, pigs are being portrayed as people in this scene so we can relate to them, which is not that far of a cry, considering they are thinking, living, breathing, feeling individuals capable of coherent thought patterns and possess communicative capabilities. Thirdly, as people, why would you (as the commercial implicates) think that it’s wrong for pigs to “enjoy the meat of a fallen friend” but it’s acceptable for humans to consume them?  I believe that this might cause a person to think how horrible it would be to eat another human.

So the subliminal conclusion to be derived at this part of the commercial would be that pigs eating pigs is wrong but humans eating pigs is not wrong. But really, isn’t it all the same? Plus, the soothing music and tranquil environment of the restaurant scene in the commercial are so familiar to us.  Right away you see everything “normal”.  Fancy restaurant, pleasant music, a “nice” ham, but then you see the pigs dining and think, “WHAT?!”

Also, what’s up with the line, “True”. In other words, “We’re just enjoying the flavors of a fallen friend.” Yeah, like you humans do. And that’s okay to do.  Nothing wrong with enjoying flavors of a nice ham, right?

I don’t think it’s morally responsible to torture and kill all for the tastebuds. Just my opinion. By the other pig saying, “True”, it subliminally confirms this twisted tradition of common society.

This turns out to be a cell phone commercial. It establishes that pigs eating pigs is wrong, but more than that, is how a cell phone company could ever charge for hidden fees.   So basically, humans can continue to eat ham, but don’t dare go with a cell phone company that charges hidden fees.  I don’t know what marketing people think sometimes.

Well, in the end, it’s unfortunately, all about the profit. And I as a vegan, even if I needed a cell phone at this point which I don’t, would purposely not choose this company because of their Meat-Munching Maniac commercial. What’s really wrong? Humans eat the pigs who have eaten other pigs. Pretty scary. Count me in as a vegan with a cute, trendy pink phone. And it didn’t take a ridiculous commercial to get me to buy it either.

The factory farming program on HBO this week was sick. Never ever touch animal food again if I can help it.

You are way to uptight. It is an absurdity, a form of comedy based on the abnormal. Relax a little, you are totally off the mark about your assumptions.

It’s absurd that pigs do get ground up and fed to each other as a “normal” part of factory farming. Using a funny commercial to make light of the situation and compare it to cell phones is something I found sorta weird. I’m not uptight about the commercial, I’m annoyed at how real the suffering is for pigs in the world. Thanks for your input!

Yes, I’m sure that’s what they were going for with the commercial. Nothing to do with absurd comedy, or hidden rates in cell phone plans; no, it was really an attempt at them to have a good laugh at farming practices!

I TOTALLY got that out of the commercial!

Now you are practicing absurd comedy. LOL

Actually, your comment made me chuckle….sounds like we have the same dry wit!
It’s all a secret plot to reveal the evil-doers plan….Mwaah, aah, aah, aaaahh!!!
Well, in all seriousness, it was a way they tried to ruffle my feathers late at night while I was trying to watch tv….guess i was just a bit shocked…that was so long ago, and do you know what? It was a short lived commercial, so i bet some crazy, radical group of hell-bent vegans got real angry and decided to overthrow the commercial crew! LOL Crazy vegans! j/k

acutally the commercial is still on because i found this site after i saw the commercial again today and wanted to see if pigs actually ate ham..the commercial is trying to say that people would think of that as cannibalism. it has nothing to do with what type of meat it is. would you like to see a commercial about two guys eating another guy? NO! thats why the pig says…”what? you think that’s wrong?”

I don’t think they really meant to show it like that, but really they shouldn’t have thought that was a good marketing strategy.
Of course there are going to be people who will get offended by a subject like that…
AND I bet a lot of people who see the commercial don’t even remember what it’s for, just that there are pigs eating pigs.

I completely agree with you, that commercial was outrageous! I was shocked at the amount of complacency people in this society maintain towards something as gruesome as a commercial depicting animals committing an act parallel to cannibalism. It was absolutely disgusting, and even some of my meat-eating friends admitted to being sickened by this image. I’m surprised it hasn’t been taken off the air and the marketing team of that company chastised for such a desperate attempt at advertising.

Oh yea, because vegans are so crazy, Tambra! Haha only kidding.

And i 100% agree. Truthfully, it really has nothing at all to do with absurd comedy or the commercial itself. It’s the fact that there are actually people out there who think its “Oh such a great idea” to Portray hidden fees on a cell phone with pigs eating pigs. It just simply sickens me at how our society is put together. We live in the kind of world were it doesn’t matter what’s morally right or wrong. Now what, that just doesn’t matter anymore?

Especially the fact that the commercial sends a message basically saying “It’s perfectly OKAY to consume all sorts of animals, oh and other humans too!” … not to mention killing the environment and supporting factory farms in the process.

Everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion, I don’t mind what people think of me. You obviously took the time to read the post, so thanks for that at least (did you read any other posts?) I don’t get the Nancy-Boys reference, but I imagine it takes one to know one. And if it means anything, I used to think the same thing…that vegans were all a bunch of crazies, which some of them are. Some are too pushy, some are too extreme, some are gentle, others are rather flippant–like me. I just go about blogging away, and like doing it. Vegan or not, there’s a lot of people out there that are pussies; and there are a lot of pushy, extreme or crazy people out there who aren’t vegan. I blog about my life and opinions so that, if there are others out there that want to learn a healthy way to live without consuming animal flesh or body fluids, then those people at least have a little corner of the world they can feel comfortable. Anyways, ethics and animal rights aside, it really comes down to this: I don’t like eating dead bodies or drinking mammary secretions of a cow. I feel that dead bodies should be buried in a grave, not in a stomach. Veganism works for me. I’m 30 years old. I’ve been vegetarian for over 15 years and I look and feel great. It obviously works for me; I got a hot body, lean muscle and a six pack. Bottom line is, everyone needs to find the eating pattern that works for them. If you’re a carnivore or omnivore, just make sure you’re happy with yourself; life would suck without contentment…you need to feel comfortable in your own skin. Oh, and try You Tube-ing the video, it’s called “Pigs eat Ham”, it’s for Boost Mobile…very silly, kinda stupid, and definitely catchy….good marketing! :p Thanks for the comment and take care.
